We set up a town with different thematic areas, showcasing makers, startups and inventors’ most recent and innovative projects to the public. Open, fresh and outspoken panel discussions will take place, putting together startups from the Maker Movement, business leaders and European policy makers.

Søren Thomsen is the Director of Educational Programs at LEGO Education, a global company with a 37-year history in developing educational solutions to enable every child to succeed in education. LEGO Education is a division of The LEGO Group, based in Billund, Denmark. With many years of experience in education, Søren is the solution architect responsible for global programs related to educational content, such as curriculum, assessment and eLearning.

MEP Pilar Del Castillo

Pilar del Castillo is a MEP for the European People’s Party. Del Castillo is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. She is a member of the Spanish party Partido Popular and has previously served as Minister of Education, Culture and Sport (2000-2004) in Spain.

MEP Brando Benifei 

Brando Benifei is a MEP for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). He is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence and of the delegation to the EU-Kazakhstan, EU-Kyrgyzstan, EU-Uzbekistan and EU-Tajikistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committees and for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia.

MEP Eva Paunova Maydell

Eva Paunova Maydell is a MEP for the European People’s Party. Maydell is a member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection. Her key interests include innovation and digitalisation, SMEs and entrepreneurship, and education. She is a member of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party. 

David Earnshaw

David Earnshaw is Vice President for European Public Policy of MSD since 2016. Earnshaw is a public policy, advocacy and communications professional and has worked on EU policy, legislative and political communications issues for over 30 years, including in the European Parliament, as head of the Brussels office of SmithKline Beecham, as head of the Brussels office of Oxfam International and in various roles with Burson-Marsteller’s Brussels office, as Senior Advisor, CEO and Chairman.

David has published widely in the peer-reviewed academic literature on EU decision making and had taught European politics at Heriot-Watt University, and Hatfield Polytechnic, in the UK. He was a visiting professor as the College of Europe in Bruges (2004 – 2014).  He had also worked in British government.

John Mulholland works with developing and introducing novel robotic solutions through Blue Ocean Robotics Norway. He is also a lecturer and researcher in Systems Engineering and Autonomy, evaluating the impact that new capabilities, such as AI, can have on their systems and society. John’s work includes the use of robotics to help overcome human issues, like social anxiety, and successfully helping these groups to reintegrate. John joins the panel as a member of the Digital Therapeutics Partnership, supporting opportunities for digital technologies which can radically improve the quality of life for sufferers of neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, bringing new diagnostic and treatment possibilities.

Henna Virkkunen

Henna Virkkunen has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014 and is a member of the European People's Party (EPP). Her primary committee is the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE). She is a substitute member of the committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN).  Before Ms Virkkunen was elected to the European Parliament, she served as a Minister of Transport and Local Government (2014) in Finland. She has also been a Minister of Public Administration and Local Government (2011-2014) and a Minister of Education (2008-2011), during her two terms as a Member of the Parliament of Finland. Ms Virkkunen has been a member of the City Council of Jyväskylä since 1997, and was the Chairwoman of the council during 2005-2008.  Ms Virkkunen is a licentiate of Philosophy.

Sankha is an MBA in Analytical Finance and Strategic Marketing from the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, India. He has more than 14 years of experience in R&D and Innovation in the Information Technology sector. Sankha has recently moved into a role managing a team of Evangelists as the Chief Innovation Evangelist. His focus is on evangelization of TCS Research and Innovation to customers in TCS’ lines of businesses. Prior to his current role, Sankha was the Principal Innovation Evangelist for TCS in UK and Mainland Europe based in London. In this role he anchored three primary functions of TCS’ Corporate Technology Office: evangelization of TCS R&D to customers, managing partnerships with academia and emerging technology firms and fostering a culture of innovation in TCS associates operating out of these geographies.

Donna Walsh

Donna Walsh is the Executive Director of the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA).

Donna’s training is in journalism but she began her career working in patient advocacy on a national platform as Information and Communications Officer at the Migraine Association of Ireland. This led to her first involvement at the European level via the European Headache Alliance – where she worked as Coordinator for a number of years. She then moved on to take up her current position within EFNA in 2012.

Since then she has been actively involved as EFNA stepped up its advocacy activities at the Brussels Institutions which culminated in February 2015 with the launch of the MEP Interest Group on Brain, Mind and Pain. She also oversees EFNA’s other workstreams in the areas of awareness, empowerment and engagement. This includes EFNA’s Training Initiatives for Neurology Advocates and their Together Under the Umbrella awareness campaign. This year, EFNA is also focusing on Young People and Health Advocacy – with an ongoing survey, planned #brainlifegoals social media initiative and a capacity building autumn workshop for those affected by neurological disorders aged 18-35. Donna represents EFNA externally – amongst others – at the European Brain Council, European Academy of Neurology, European Society of Radiology (Patient Advisory Group) and within the Societal Impact of Pain platform.

Cecile Huet

Cécile Huet is Deputy Head of the Unit "Robotics and Artificial Intelligence" at the European Commission. This unit funds and assists beneficial robotics and AI developments within Europe.

The unit is in charge of one of the world's largest civilian programme in robotics with a budget of €700 million EU funding from Horizon 2020, supplemented by €2.1 billion from the European robotics industry in the context of the Robotics Public-Private Partnership.

Moreover this unit is at the heart of the new Communication on Artificial Intelligence for Europe.

Cécile joined the European Commission in 2001, and the unit dealing with Cognitive systems and Robotics since its creation in 2004. Before joining the EC, she worked for the industry in the field of signal processing after a post-doc at the University of California Santa Barbara and a PhD at University of Nice Sophia Antipolis.

In 2015, she has been selected as one of the "25 women in robotics you need to know about"

Elinor Samuelsson 

Elinor Samuelsson is a Swedish Interaction Designer and a Co-Founder of The Kokon, a tech startup that aims to end the stress pandemic through smart responsive environments. Elinor has built multiple experiences using technology for good - from an office stress resilience chair to a carbon footprint expense tracker, to a sensory hoodie to prevent jetlag and emotion centric interaction for autonomous cars. Elinor has three patents pending, and is an advocate for Designing for Compassion. Her designs use processes of contextual data, neuroscience, social inclusion and zero waste. Elinor graduated from Parsons the New School for Design in 2013 with an interest in open innovation, patterns of organisation, and kindness technology to reverse climate change.

Michela Palladino

Michela Palladino is the Director, European Policy and Government Relations, at the Developers Alliance, the world’s leading advocate for software developers and the companies invested in their success. Michela runs the Alliance’s Brussels office and is responsible for bringing the voice of the developers’ community to the EU Institutions in order to support the industry’s continued growth, and promote innovation.

An Italian native, Michela has worked in EU Public Policy for almost 10 years. Before joining the Alliance in May 2017, Michela worked for six years at the GSMA, the trade association that represents the worldwide mobile communications industry. Prior to that she worked for the Italian Permanent Representation to the EU, the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the European Parliament.

Michela holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Bologna, Italy.

Entrepreneur with more than 13 years business management experience in sectors related with Performing Arts and New Technologies world. Specialization in developing projects directed to people with differential capabilities with the aim of achieving a more egalitarian future for everybody.

Emilian Pavel

Emilian Pavel is a Member of the European Parliament since 2014, working in the Committee of Employment and Social Affairs, and the Committee of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He is also a member of the Delegation for relations with Israel, Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean. His priorities in the European Parliament include Digital Agenda, youth entrepreneurship and employability, lifelong learning and education. In the beginning of 2017, he was chosen as MEP of the year for Employment and Social Affairs. He is the president of the Friends of Serbia informal group and an ambassador for the European Entrepreneurship Education Network. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in computer engineering and a Master's Degree in environmental protection. He has been involved in politics for over 15 years and he is one of the Vice Presidents of the Young Romanian Social Democrats organisation. He has held various positions within the Social Democratic party at regional and national level, and has acted as Director in the Romanian Ministry for Youth and Sport.

 Luís Viegas Cardoso

Luís VIEGAS CARDOSO is the Policy Adviser to the Head of the 'European Political Strategy Centre', the European Commission's in-house think that provides strategic advice and policy analysis directly to the President and to the colleague of Commissioners. In his role, he contributes to the management of six interdisciplinary teams and advises on digital and innovation policies, contributing to the strategic thinking and forward-looking policy advice.

Before joining the EPSC, he worked for eleven years in digital economy, innovation policies and European funds. From 2011 to 2017, he was an Adviser at the European Parliament focusing his work on digital related topics and fostering innovation across the European Union. From 2007 to 2011, Luis worked as a Senior Consultant in an international management firm designing and implementing innovation programmes, supporting strategic management decisions and setting up investment scenarios in accordance to the European schemes. He also served on the management board and senate of the University of Coimbra and was general manager of the largest student academy in Portugal.

Luís holds a Degree in Economics from the University of Coimbra and a post-graduate qualification in Foresight, Strategy and Innovation from the ISEG School of Economics and Management at the Technical University of Lisbon. He is currently undertaking an International Master’s in Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurial Leadership at the ESCP Europe.

Aura Salla

Aura Salla is currently working as Communication Adviser in the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC), in-house think thank to President Jean-Claude Juncker. Before joining the EPSC she was working as a Member of Cabinet and Communications Adviser of Jyrki Katainen, European Commission Vice President responsible for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness. She joined Mr Katainen's team in August 2014.

Before joining the Commission she worked in a consultancy firm Recommended Finland as a Project Manager specialising in Public Affairs and EU Communications and before that as a speechwriter in the Finnish Parliament.

Aura holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Turku Finland where she continued to her PhD studies in 2017. She has also studied Economics of the European Union in University of Leipzig, Germany and has been visiting lecturer in Harvard University.
